Crossmith Terms of Use

Last updated: 20 October 2026

These terms are between you and PVT Digital Ltd, registered at 20 Wenlock Road, London, N1 7GU, England and Wales ("Crossmith", "we", "us"). By using Crossmith you agree to them. If you do not agree, please do not use the site.

1. Who can use Crossmith

Anyone can solve puzzles without an account. To publish puzzles you need to sign in. You must be at least [OWNER TO CONFIRM minimum age] years old to create an account. Crossmith is not aimed at children. Our privacy notice explains how we use personal data.

2. Your account

  • Keep your sign-in details safe. You are responsible for what happens under your account.
  • Give us accurate information. Your handle must not copy or imitate someone else.
  • Some handles are reserved. We may refuse or change a handle that is misleading or offensive.
  • You can close your account at any time. Tell us at hello@crossmith.com if you need help.

3. Your puzzles and who owns them

You keep ownership of the puzzles you publish. That includes titles, clues, explanations, your profile name, bio and links.

By publishing, you give Crossmith a non-exclusive, worldwide, free licence to store, display and distribute your content. We use it:

  • on the Crossmith site and apps;
  • in RSS feeds;
  • in search-engine previews; and
  • to generate cover and preview images from your grid.

The licence lasts while your content is on Crossmith, plus a short time for backups and caches to clear. It ends sooner for content you delete, except where we must keep a copy (for example, a record of a moderation decision).

You promise that you have the right to publish what you submit. Do not copy other people's clues or puzzles without permission.

4. Content rules

Do not publish, or link to, any of the following:

  • illegal content;
  • hateful or abusive content, including harassment, threats or targeting people for who they are;
  • sexual content;
  • spam or scams, including misleading links;
  • content that infringes someone else's copyright or other rights; or
  • anything else that is harmful or that breaks the law.

Also, do not use another setter's name, handle or identity in a way that could mislead people.

Text only. Crossmith does not allow image uploads. Profile links appear as plain text and open as ordinary web links.

5. Checks before publishing

When you publish, we run an automatic check on titles, clues, explanations, bios and links. If it finds a problem, the puzzle is held for a person to review before it goes live. This check is not perfect. Passing it does not mean your content follows these terms.

6. Using Crossmith as a solver

You may play puzzles for personal, non-commercial use. Signed-in solvers can like puzzles, follow setters and rate difficulty. If you follow a setter, we may email you when they publish a new puzzle; every email has a one-click unsubscribe. Please do not:

  • scrape or copy puzzles in bulk;
  • try to disrupt, overload or break into the service; or
  • misuse the Report button.

7. Visibility, scheduling and unpublishing

Each puzzle is public, unlisted or private. Unlisted puzzles are not listed and are asked not to be indexed by search engines, but anyone with the link can open them. Do not use unlisted for anything sensitive.

You can schedule a puzzle to publish later, and you can unpublish or delete it at any time. Copies held by other people, search engines or feed readers may remain outside our control.

8. Reports, hiding, removal and suspension

Anyone can report a puzzle or profile. We may, at our discretion and where we think these terms or the law are broken:

  • hide content (a quick, reversible step);
  • remove content;
  • suspend your account, which hides all your pages; or
  • restore content if we get it wrong.

We will normally tell you what we did and why, and you can ask for a review. Our Moderation and Complaints Policy explains how this works. We may act straight away, without warning, where content looks illegal or seriously harmful.

9. Deleting your content

You can delete puzzles and your account. When you delete a puzzle, we empty its content from our database 30 days later. A short link can be deleted outright, which removes it at once. If you delete your account, we delete your content within [OWNER TO CONFIRM] days, except where the law or a live moderation matter means we must keep some records (for example, the moderation log). Our privacy notice gives the details.

10. Our responsibility

We run Crossmith with reasonable care, but we provide it "as is". Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot legally be limited, such as for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.

Otherwise, as far as the law allows, we are not liable for loss of data, profit or business, or for indirect loss. We are not responsible for content that setters publish, or for websites that setters link to. [OWNER TO CONFIRM liability cap, if any: ask the solicitor.]

If you are a consumer, your legal rights are not affected.

11. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. For important changes we will give notice on the site or by email [OWNER TO CONFIRM how much notice]. If you keep using Crossmith after a change takes effect, you accept it.

12. Governing law

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction [OWNER TO CONFIRM: solicitor to confirm]. If you are a consumer living elsewhere in the UK, you may also have the right to go to your local courts.
